To complete the program of study leading to the Master of Science in Recreation and Sport Sciences with a concentration in Coaching Education degree, participants must satisfactorily complete the required graduate course work with a minimum of fifty (50) quarter hours. The following is a list of the courses that have been incorporated in the online program.
PESS 518K: Dr. Dave Carr
Coaching Workshop (3)
Residency 1
This is the first orientation residency on the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio. The purpose is to help participants acclimatize to the program through a variety of workshops, projects, and presentations. The orientation is built around a collaborative team project focusing on the nature of coaching as a profession. Participants will also complete an individual learning module and start a current events discussion during the week. These activities will help participants become familiar with the program structure and the information technology to be used as a means of learning and research in the program. Equally important, participants and faculty will get to know each other in a face-to-face environment before starting to work together at a distance.

Foundations of Coaching (4)
This course is designed to provide principles and methods necessary to become an effective coach at the youth, interscholastic, intercollegiate, Olympic and professional levels. Focus will include qualities for successful leadership, strategies for effective and cohesive programs, developing a sound coaching philosophy, and gaining an understanding of the art and science of coaching.
PESS 642: Dr. Ronald Quinn Ethics in Sports (4)
The course discusses ethics, rights, and responsibilities related to coaches. The purpose of the course is to help people involved in coaching develop a personal philosophy regarding social responsibility. Topics discussed include concepts of morality, personal philosophy regarding social responsibility, theories of ethics, professional code of ethics, etc.

Supervised work experience in various coaching settings. Students will demonstrate effective coaching through the submission of evidence-based documentation and video documentation.
PESS 654: Dr. Heather Lawrence
Management & Leadership (4)
Contemporary theories relating to management and leadership in sports are examined and their application to coaching are addressed.
PESS 635: Dr. Mike Sheridan
Psychology of Coaching (4)
The course focuses on analysis of psychological factors and principles designed to assist coaches in their ability to describe, explain, and predict attitudes, feelings and behaviors of sports participants.
PESS 628: Athena Yiamouyiannis
Legal Foundations and Risk Management in Athletics (4)
This course provides an advanced understanding of legal proceedings, legal research, negligence, and risk management. Specifically, this course focuses on risk management as an ongoing responsibility of coaches. Through actual experiences of advanced legal research and the development of a risk management plan for a sports program, participants will develop a deeper understanding of the current status of negligence as it applies to coaching profession and the development of a risk management plan to reduce operational risks.

This course offers an operational understanding of research in recreation and sport sciences in general and coaching in particular. The purpose of the course is to help coaches become intelligent users of research-based information.

Performance & Conditioning for Coaches (4)
This course presents principles and applications of exercise physiology for coaches. Students will evaluate anatomical, physiology and biomechanical demands of a sport that will allow for the optimal design of fitness and resistance training programs.

Exploration of current information available concerning interrelationships between dietary adequacy and physical performance.

This course presents key concepts pertaining to the field of athletic health care specifically the prevention and management of activity related injuries or illnesses to assist coaches in making correct decisions and taking appropriate actions.

Athletic Fund Raising (3)
Techniques to prepare coaches to assume the responsibility for fundraising programs within sport organizations.
