This new online course seeks to provide students with a practical understanding of the processes, growth and challenges involved in micro-financing programs that have made this approach one of the most innovative social development strategies. Drawing from some of the most well-known programs around the world, such as the pioneering Grameen Bank and other similar programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the U.S., the goal is to guide participants to effectively assess the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a new microfinancing program, evaluate an existing program in which they may be involved, or critically analyze a program they are familiar with. This course also will look at how microfinancing programs contribute to address other development challenges such as gender, health and education. In addition, the course will examine communication dimensions involved in microfinancing programs and the role communication processes play in advancing microfinancing programs and broader development goals.
