All students participating in the MLEA program,
must complete pre-project surveys; analyze the results,
and answer the questions noted below, PRIOR to
the first in-person session for Project 1. Directions for completing
this assignment are
noted
below.
Any questions about the pre-project surveys should be directed
to Dr. Glascock at glascock@ohio.edu.

The completion of Pre-Project Surveys are required
prior to the first session. This series of surveys gives participants
the opportunity to find out more about themselves. This information
will help participants learn some of the components of their individual
leadership characteristics. Effective leaders are people who understand
their strengths and weaknesses and are able to adjust their behavior
according to situational needs and then use the most productive behavior.
Further, effective leaders are able to use a variety of leadership
styles
depending on the situation that presents itself.

The following instruments make up the Pre-Project
Surveys and are available in printed form in the student pre-packet
and online.
- Keirsey Temperament Sorter: online instrument
similar to the Myers-Briggs.
http://www.keirsey.com/cgi-bin/newkts.cgi
- Strategic Leadership Style Instrument: eight leadership
styles are the basis of this survey. This instrument and interpretive
method are provided in the pre-packet.
- Conflict Management Style Survey: this instrument
identifies one's preferred method of handling conflict.
- Leadership Vision for Schools and other Organizations:
this instrument measures whether one is more prone to visionary or
managerial approaches to leadership.
- Emotional Intelligence: this instrument compliments
the measure of intelligence by recognizing that one's emotional
behavior
plays an important role in interpersonal relationships, including
leader/subordinate.
Students are required to bring the completed and
analyzed results from the noted instruments on the first day of the
first session. Students
may keep it confidential, however, any portion of input from others
in the class is often beneficial, especially as issues arise during
the
course
of
the program.

After analyzing the results
of the surveys, the following questions need to be considered by
each
participant:
- Does my personality predispose me to a leadership
role?
- How will subordinates respond to my personality?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of my personality in an organizational
setting?
- What is your preferred leadership style? What are
its strengths and weaknesses?
- How will subordinates respond to my preferred leadership
style?
- Am I a visionary or managerial leader? What are
the strengths and weaknesses of my choice?
- What is my preferred conflict resolution style?
- How will subordinates respond to my conflict resolution
style?
