OHIC Insurance Company, headquartered in Columbus OH, has been creating medical liability insurance that meets the needs of the healthcare community for 25 years. For the past ten years they have partnered with Ohio University Without Boundaries to provide a unique certification program for healthcare risk management professionals.

The Challenge
OHIC has extensive expertise for providing high quality education to healthcare risk managers. Thus far, with the exception of the Risk Management Certification Program, their educational efforts have been restricted to face-to-face seminars. They want to break down the boundaries of time and space and make education available using the any-time, any-place convenience of an elearning simulation.

Solution
OUWB, in partnership with OHIC developed an animated, interactive online simulation. This engaging simulation entitled "Blue Mountain Medical Center" is designed to help individuals learn more about risk management and develop understanding and skills necessary for the practice of healthcare risk management. Blue Mountain Medical Center Simulation is based on a constructivist approach to learning and is built around a number of learning projects. Each project places the learner in the role of a risk manager at Blue Mountain Medical Center and poses a real-world problem or challenge then asks the learner to take action.
